This is a detailed history of the use of the pitch count statistic.  Rany Jazayerli, one of the original founders of Baseball Prospectus, makes the case that many pitchers’ careers have been saved by limiting their pitch count. But in the case of Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals are being overprotective. The fact that they limited innings instead of pitches shows they don’t understand the logic and data behind the strategy.
